Top Diving Sites Worldwide

Top Diving Sites Worldwide

Two thirds of our earth is covered by the sea – but even the moon has been better explored than the depths of the ocean. Diving offers you the opportunity to discover the underwater world, to see colorful and unique fish and corals with your own eyes and to get to know swimming turtles. So that you can start your adventure, you first need a diving license. And then there is also the question of where are the best diving spots in the world – in Indonesia, in Thailand or in the Caribbean? I will introduce you to the top destinations where you can dive wonderfully!

Indonesia – the greatest biodiversity in the world

Thanks to Bali, Lombok & Co. Indonesia is not only known for dreamlike islands with white sandy beaches, the underwater landscape is also one of the most beautiful in the world. Raja Ampat in Western New Guinea belongs to the absolute Mecca of diving spots . With 13,000 species of fish and 550 species of coral , the reefs are home to more living things than any other. Even the Great Barrier Reef in Australia can’t keep up with that.

But not only the underwater world off Raja Ampat, but also many dive sites in Indonesia are uniquely beautiful. Are you looking for the ultimate thrill? Then dive in the Komodo National Park with the so-called drift diving with the currents. A very special challenge. Manta rays in particular love the underwater world of Komodo and delight the divers. Small sea creatures, such as the colorful nudibranchs popular with divers, are waiting to be discovered by you. These tiny snails are hard to find, but that’s exactly what makes the challenge, isn’t it? For those who haven’t found any nudibranchs yet: I’ve hidden one for you in the post šŸ˜‰

If you want to find out more about the largest island nation in the world, I recommend the Indonesia Guide in my travel magazine. This country can do so much more than Bali!

Malaysia – a paradise for divers

In addition to Indonesia, the reefs of Malaysia are among the most beautiful dive sites in the world. The most popular diving spot – and therefore rightly number one – the small island of Sipadan. If you want to book a dive here, you have to be quick and make a reservation well in advance! Otherwise you will unfortunately end up on the waiting list quickly. Sipadan makes the heart of every diver beat faster. Whether schools of barracuda, manta rays, hammer sharks or whale sharks : look forward to an unforgettable underwater landscape – the most beautiful in the world!

Thailand – the diving stronghold

Fun fact: In no other country are there as many diving licenses as in Thailand . Especially on Koh Tao, the Thai diving island par excellence, it is teeming with diving newbies who are excited about their first diving experiences. The courses are particularly cheap here and the diving conditions are ideal for beginners. By the way: Koh Tao means something like turtle island. If that’s not a good omen šŸ˜‰

Caribbean – diving, dreaming, vacation

Caribbean - diving, dreaming, vacation

White sandy beaches, crystal clear water and palm trees make the vacation feeling in the Caribbean perfect. But an unforgettable beauty is also waiting for you underwater.

In Belize you can admire the colors of the corals in the Great Blue Hole. With a visibility of up to 30 meters and water temperatures that are reminiscent of the bathtub at home, your dive is sure to be unforgettable. You slowly descend into the sinking, deep blue cave . From a depth of 15 meters you will witness a fascinating spectacle, namely how salt water changes to fresh water. You don’t believe me? Take your breathing apparatus out of your mouth for a moment and test it!

Other unique dive sites in the Caribbean are, for example, off the coast of Bonaire or Curacao.

Australia – more than the Great Barrier Reef

Australia - more than the Great Barrier Reef

According to harvardshoes.com, diving in Australia is mostly directly associated with the world famous Great Barrier Reef. But stop! There is so much more to discover in Australia! You should definitely add the following diving spots to your bucket list: Ningaloo Reef, The Yongala and Kangaroo Island. Each of these spots has something special in store for you.

At the Ningaloo Reef on the west coast of Australia you can dive with the largest fish in the world, the gentle whale shark, and dolphins and dugongs are also at home off the west coast of Australia. If you love sea lions and want to swim with the cute animals, you should visit Kangaroo Island , a beautiful island off the coast of Adelaide . In tropical Queensland lies the Yongala, a ship that sank over 100 years ago and is just waiting to be explored by you.

Egypt – diving in the Red Sea

Egypt - diving in the Red Sea

Get on the plane and within four hours you will be at my next top diving spot: Egypt is the most popular destination for German divers . The selection of diving schools is large, especially in tourist strongholds such as Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh. But I recommend you to go further south for your diving adventure, because here the corals are still very well preserved and the diving conditions are better. Marsa Alam , for example, is an Eldorado for divers .

Diving safaris offer an alternative to day trips , which take you on a mostly one-week diving trip. But look here for a good and trustworthy provider. What you should pay attention to with the providers and why it is important to protect the biodiversity of the Red Sea, you can find out in my article about snorkeling in the Red Sea .

My tip : The best season for diving in Egypt is from September to November, by the way, perfect to escape the German autumn and winter!

Learn to dive – from the pool into the sea

Learn to dive - from the pool into the sea

From newbie to professional? Of course, I’ve also put together all the information you need for your upcoming diving career!

The price for a diving course varies depending on the country and provider. The Thai island of Koh Tao, for example, is famous for inexpensive diving courses. When choosing a diving school, you should make sure that you get a diving license from PADI or SSI and that the equipment is well maintained and in top condition. Because safety comes first when diving! First you will learn some theoretical basics in a diving course that will prepare you for the time underwater.

Once the first basics have been laid, you can quickly start your first pool training and finally a real dive in the sea . Your diving masters will teach you step by step all the important knowledge and skills, for example how to use the breathing apparatus underwater or how to get water out of the diving mask again. You do all exercises and dives together with your body, that’s what the divers call their dive partner. As a team you support each other and master all tasks together – it’s a lot more fun! Most beginner diving courses last 3-4 days, after which you are qualified to dive to a depth of 18 meters. Congratulations!

Overview of diving certificates

As I have already explained to you, there are several certificates. Once in the diving fever, the first license is often followed by many more in order to further develop your own skills and to face new challenges. For each completed course you will receive an ID that works like a pass in the world of diving . All over the world you can identify yourself with this pass and prove your dive level. I have put together an overview of the possible diving certificates for you here.

Overview of PADI diving licenses

  • Discover Scuba Diving – First diving experiences
  • Open Water Diver – diving to a depth of 18 meters
  • Adventure Diver – e.g. shipwreck diving
  • Advanced Open Water – diving to a depth of 30 meters
  • Rescue Diver – Emergency Management and Rescue Operations
  • Master Diver – Highest, non-professional level

Get into the water!

Now you have all the information you need to immerse yourself in your adventure. Of course, my tips only offer a selection of the best spots. Out there, in the big wide world, there are certainly many other interesting and rather unknown diving destinations waiting. Would you like a change from the tropical dive sites? Then take a look at my Iceland tips , here you can dive between the continental plates, it’s amazing! In addition, I am of course happy about your diving experiences and tips.
